Oxendine Supports S 604: Encourages Isakson and Chambliss to Co-Sponsor‏

As Comptroller General of Georgia, I am proud to offer my support to S.604, The Federal Reserve Sunshine Act of 2009.

S. 604 is the companion to H.R. 1207, legislation introduced in the House of Representatives by Congressman Ron Paul, which currently stands with 237 cosponsors, a majority of the House.

This important legislation directs the Comptroller General to complete, before the end of 2010, an audit of the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System and of the Federal Reserve banks, followed by a detailed report to Congress.

This legislation is supported by conservative leaders Senator Jim DeMint (R-SC), Senator Michael Crapo (R- ID), and Senator David Vitter (R - LA). I encourage Georgia's two United States Senators, Johnny Isakson and Saxby Chambliss, to sign on as co-sponsors and provide their credibility to this legislation.

Oxendine Holds a Commanding Lead

John Oxendine, Georgia's fire and insurance commissioner, holds a commanding lead over all other Republican gubernatorial hopefuls in an early look at next year's state GOP Primary.

A new Rasmussen Reports telephone survey in Georgia shows Oxendine with 35% support among those likely to vote in the state's open Republican Primary. His next closest competitors are Georgia Secretary of State Karen Handel with 11% and Congressman Nathan Deal at 10%. But 33% are not sure which candidate they prefer.

State Senator Eric Johnson has three percent (3%) support, while State Representative Austin Scott tallies two percent (2%). Conservative businessman Ray McBerry is supported by one percent (1%), and five percent (5%) like some other candidate.

Sixty-one percent (61%) of those likely to vote in the GOP Primary have a favorable opinion of Oxendine, while just 18% view him unfavorably. Twenty percent (20%) don't have an opinion of Oxendine. These numbers are largely unchanged from April.

Forty-nine percent (49%) have a favorable view of Handel, with 12% unfavorable. But like all the candidates other than Oxendine, she is little known by many Georgia voters. Thirty-eight percent (38%) say they don't know enough about Handel to voice an opinion of her.

For Deal, his favorables are 28% and his unfavorables are 14%. But 58% don't have an opinion about the 16-year congressman.

Johnson is viewed favorably by 21% and unfavorably by 14%, with 66% not sure what they think of him.

Twenty percent (20%) have a favorable regard for Scott, while 11% view him unfavorably. But nearly seven-out-of-10 Georgia voters (69%) aren't sure what they think of Scott.

McBerry has 17% favorables and 14% unfavorables, also with 69% who have no opinion of him.

This statewide telephone survey of 463 Likely Republican Primary Voters in Georgia was conducted by Rasmussen Reports June 17, 2009. The margin of sampling error for the survey is +/- 5 percentage points with a 95% level of confidence.

Statement from Team Oxendine:

At some point, John's opponents will need some new spin. John has demonstrated respect for his opponents by publicly acknowledging that with six candidates, a runoff is a reality. John has demonstrated in a very consistent manner that he has earned the trust and respect of the conservative movement in Georgia and John will be the conservative candidate in the runoff.

The numbers speak for themselves:

* John has more than a three to one lead over his two closest opponents.
* When you combine the numbers of his two closest opponents, he has a greater than 10 point lead over their combined numbers.
* When you combine the numbers of all other announced candidates and the "other" category, John leads all those combined.
* John's approval rating is at a solid 61%. John is the only Republican with an approval rating higher than 50%.


"With Roy Barnes in this campaign, Georgia Republicans understand we must nominate the strongest candidate to run in the general election. John Oxendine is that candidate," said Kathryn Ballou, campaign manager.

"John's opponents will say the poll numbers do not matter. The polls are not worth the paper they are printed on. In other words, John's opponents validate the central premise of John's campaign. John Oxendine is the grassroots Governor who represents people - the people who participate in these polls. John's establishment opponents, who listen to the special interests in Atlanta and Washington DC, simply are out of touch with what the grassroots in the Georgia Republican Party want in a nominee for Governor," said Kathryn.

"John's very proud of where the campaign is and he will continue to work very hard to earn the trust and support of Georgia," said Kathryn.

Oxendine Leads Republican Candidates in Georgia Municipal Association (GMA) Membership Poll

As it does each year, GMA conducted a survey of both elected and appointed city officials a few weeks before its Annual Convention. The survey was successfully emailed to 2,099 mayors, council members, managers and clerks. GMA received 528 usable responses for a response rate of 25.15%.

Oxendine Joins Georgia Conservatives in Calling for a Veto override of HB 481

HB 481 is a pro-jobs bill helping Georgia small businesses willing to hire unemployed workers at a time when Georgia families desperately need jobs.

It is a free market, small government approach which would provide an appropriate level of state government involvement in the free market system. It is a tragedy that Georgia families cannot benefit from this important piece of legislation.

The JOBS Act of 2009 was one of the best pieces of legislation passed during this last Session. Tax cuts have proven to be a successful economic stimulus, both for the economy and the government. Lowering the taxes of businesses hiring those in need of jobs would have been a great incentive and helped both the unemployed and the business owner. Cutting capital gains taxes would have encouraged more investment into the state. It is a sad day when this type of legislation gets vetoed by a Republican Governor.

If I were Governor, I would make it a priority to sign any bill cutting taxes and encouraging economic development on the day after session ended. The people of Georgia need jobs and this free market approach to that problem should have been signed weeks ago, not vetoed today.

This is the type of stimulus Georgia needs and what Washington should have passed.

I call on the legislature to put the people of Georgia first and override the veto of HB 481.

It's time for real stimulus.

Oxendine: Where are the Tax Cuts in this Economy?

Insurance Commissioner John Oxendine today questioned whether government will continue to worsen the pain of the citizens of our nation as politicians fail to embrace the principles that would jump-start this economy such as significant tax cuts.

"All I see elected officials doing is more of the same. Inflicting more grief on our hard-working citizens," Oxendine said. "If they truly understood sound economic principles as did Ronald Reagan and even Democrat John Kennedy, they would stumble over each other to significantly cut taxes. That's how you turn around an economy."

Oxendine pointed to the $790 billion so-called stimulus plan in Congress, a pork-laden spending measure he said will add to our nation's debt and potentially spark inflation in the near future.

"We also don't need to indebt future generations to pay the price for our government's mistakes and its lack of discipline when it comes to taking a knife to spending," Oxendine said.

"This so-called stimulus package is an invitation to expand social spending in our state government, irresponsible temporary solutions to serious issues, and larger state budgets," he said. "Instead of the current "Porkulus Bill," I urge the President and Congress to take steps that support small businesses across America and Georgia. Allow for the tax deduction for a new small business startup cost to double, to $10,000 from its current $5,000. Many people being laid off will be starting small businesses and this action is real stimulus right now," said Oxendine.

Here in Georgia, Oxendine said he is concerned Georgia's 1.7 million homeowners, farmers, and small business owners will see a tax increase later this year. That amount could be even greater if Governor Perdue vetoes legislation passed dealing with property tax relief since the bill made sure homeowners did not have to cover a shortfall in state revenues for this year's budget. If the governor does veto the bill, homeowners would not only have higher property tax bills later this year, but could also receive an additional tax bill of $300 to cover a shortfall for their last year's property tax bills.

"The party of less taxes and less government should get this one basic concept," Oxendine said. "In this tough, tough economy, when layoffs are happening every day, you absolutely do not ask taxpayers to pony up more money to fund government. You cut spending, period. You only fund services that are required by the Constitution. And we all know we have many services that aren't what the founders of this nation or this state envisioned taxpayers to be paying for."

"It is unfair for state officials to posture themselves as being a friend to counties, cities, and school boards when they are passing along unfunded mandates from Washington and the state Capitol," Oxendine said. "Our county commissioners, mayors and city council members are good people who deserve a state government that is a partner not an obstacle to local control."

Statement from John Oxendine on Second Amendment

A Statement from Commissioner John Oxendine:

Like many Georgians who support the Second Amendment, I was disappointed Casey Cagle all but abandoned his support for the Second Amendment during his annual pre-Session press conference.

Casey Cagle was emphatic that pro-Second Amendment legislation sponsored by State Senator Mitch Seabaugh, which would allow law abiding Georgians to expand the areas they can legally carry their concealed weapon, would be dead on arrival in a Casey Cagle Senate.

Casey Cagle stated he has "no appetite for it" and Georgians "should be content with where we are."

Casey Cagle may not have an appetite for expanding and protecting the Second Amendment Rights of Georgians, but I do. I support those legislators who stand for the Second Amendment.

Casey Cagle may be content and want a respite in standing up for our Second Amendment rights, but I will never rest until we ensure that we have protected the Second Amendment and made every effort to ensure our Constitutional Right to Keep and Bear Arms.

I am a proud Life Member of the National Rifle Association, the Georgia Sports Shooting Association and GeorgiaCarry.org. I remain unapologetic and offer unqualified support of the Second Amendment. I will always have an appetite to protect and defend the Second Amendment.

It is of concern that people can legally carry guns in more places in states such as, California and Oregon. Georgians who understand the principles of the Second Amendment will not be content until we have the legal right in Georgia to enjoy the blessings of our liberty.

Oxendine Announces Arrest of Suspects in Insurance Fraud Bust

Insurance Commissioner John W. Oxendine said arrest warrants have been issued on 19 suspects in an insurance fraud ring that allegedly collected $995,641.75 in misappropriated claims from a Japanese insurance company.

The suspected ringleader, Ken Dewberry, 42, of Lawrenceville, worked for Sompo Japan Insurance Company of America at the time the theft occurred -- March 1, 2001 to March 30, 2004. He has been charged with 30 counts of theft by taking, as well as charges under the federal Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations (RICO) Act.....More
