Memorial Day Weekend

On Saturday and Sunday, May 24th, and 25th, two events will take place in downtown Atlanta that will affect traffic and bring thousands of specters to the area. The annual Atlanta Jazz Festival will begin on Friday evening and will affect the following streets:

· Edgewood Avenue from Peachtree St. to Peachtree Center Avenue.

· Auburn Avenue from Peachtree St. to Peachtree Center Avenue.

· Park Place from John Wesley Dobbs to Edgewood Avenue.

These streets will be closed beginning May 23rd at 6:00 p.m. and remain closed through Monday night.

In addition, on Saturday May 24, the annual Caribbean parade and festival will take place. This event begins at 12:00 noon and will affect the following streets with a parade:

· W. Peachtree St. from Pine St. to Peachtree St.

· Peachtree St. from Pine St. to Auburn Avenue.

· John Wesley Dobbs / Erwin St. from Peachtree St. to Fort St.

The festival will take place directly after the parade and will affect the following streets:

· Auburn Avenue between Jessie Hill Blvd and Hilliard St.

· Fort St. from Erwin St. to Edgewood Avenue.

· Bell St. from Erwin St. to Edgewood Avenue.

It is strongly recommended that MARTA be utilized. The Atlanta Police will strictly enforce all traffic and parking laws by ticketing and impounding illegally parked vehicles.

County Honors Fallen Heroes

Gwinnett County will host the annual Memorial Day ceremony on Monday, May 26 at the Gwinnett Fallen Heroes Memorial at 1 p.m. The observance will pay tribute to the nation’s military veterans and honor one local serviceman who was killed in the line of duty. The ceremony will be televised that evening at 7:30pm on TVgwinnett cable channel 23 (on most cable providers in Gwinnett County).

The public is invited to attend this event to help thank the men and women who have served honorably in the military, during wartime or peacetime, and to memorialize the fallen heroes who have sacrificed their lives to protect our nation. Retired Maj. Gen. Terry E. Juskowiak will give the keynote address. Board of Commissioners Chairman Charles Bannister, District 1 Commissioner Lorraine Green, District 3 Commissioner Mike Beaudreau, and County Administrator Jock Connell will also speak during the ceremony. Honor guard units from the Gwinnett County Corrections, Fire and Emergency Services, Police and Sheriff’s Departments and the Lawrenceville Police Department are scheduled to take part in the event.

One name will be added to the memorial under the heading Global War on Terrorism – Army Sgt. First Class Donald Theronnie Tabb. Tabb was killed on Feb. 5 in Sangin, Afghanistan. Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., he moved to Gwinnett County in 1996. He was a 1998 graduate of Meadowcreek High School in Norcross.

The Gwinnett Fallen Heroes Memorial, located on the grounds of the Gwinnett Justice and Administration Center, 75 Langley Drive in Lawrenceville, honors all Gwinnett residents who died in the line of duty in military or public service. The memorial opened in 2003 and was built with funds from private donations and Gwinnett County government.

The Atlanta Cyclorama and Civil War Museum Celebrates Memorial Day Weekend

On Memorial Day weekend May 24th and 25th , the Atlanta Cyclorama will commemorate and recognize our Military from the Revolutionary War to the Present. Participating are members of the Military and re-enactors with displays from Revolutionary, Spanish American, Civil War, WWI, WWII and Current Military equipment. Included in the displays are a WWII Jeep and today’s HumVee.

A special guest Kenneth Powell will be signing the recently published book “Four Stars In The Window.” Mr. Powell was a B-17 pilot in WWII. He and his three brothers who served in WWII is the subject of the book. Mrs. Powell, Kathleen, dressed as “Rosie the Riveter” will be telling this important part of our colorful history.

The Atlanta Cyclorama is home of the Locomotive TEXAS, of The Great Locomotive Chase. The museum also features numerous civil war displays, videos and an excellent bookstore and gift shop.

Take your place in history and enjoy our colorful heritage at the Cyclorama. Located in Historic Grant Park, there are guided tours 9:00AM to 4:30 PM Tuesday through Sunday. Admission is $7.00 for adults; $6.00 for seniors and Zoo members; $5.00 for children 6-12; and, FREE for children under 6 years old.
