City of Atlanta Layoff Update

298 employees were separated May 1, 2 or 5, 2008.

This includes 12 part-time extra-help employees in the Department of Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs and one additional filled position not previously identified in Executive Offices.

Not included are 64 Traffic Safety Monitors (part-time extra-help positions) that were abolished and the incumbents transferred to the Atlanta Public Schools.

9 employees retired or resigned prior to the RIF
11 vacancies were identified for abolishment in lieu of filled positions
7 positions were transferred to other funds or agencies
3 positions were removed from consideration (Finance)
63 separations were deferred until June (22 Fire Recruits,
31 Judicial Agencies
10 Building Inspectors in the Planning reorganization

The length of service ranges from recent hires to 30 plus years.
All regular (benefits earning) employees received a minimum of 2 weeks pay.

The Department of Parks Recreation &Cultural Affairs and Atlanta Fire Rescue are seeking City Council approval for a one-time retirement incentive payment for employees who are already eligible to retire. An employee must have 30 years of creditable service. Parks will offer 20% of the base salary and Fire 10%.
